A.	Experimental Grants: under the two Marie-Curie Fellowships and the SIRG-SFI Grant, Dr. A. Benedetto has been granted a total of about 170 days of neutron beam-time (about 34 different experiments) in several large-scale facilities worldwide (i.e. ILL, ISIS, LMZ, NIST, SNS, and PSI).

B.	Computational Grant: under the two Marie-Curie Fellowships and the SIRG-SFI Grant, Dr. A. Benedetto has been awarded several millions of cpu-hours on the Irish and the Swiss super computers (i.e. ICHEC and CSCS) both through institutional and peer-reviewed accesses.
Prizes and Honours  

 Dr. Antonio Benedetto has been awarded the “Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting Awards 2016” by the Irish Research Council to honour his participation to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting 2016. The award was presented by Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell. 

He has been selected to attend the “Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting 2016” dedicated to the field of Physics (Lindau, Germany). 31 Nobel Laureates and 400 young scientists from 80 different countries that, like Dr. A. Benedetto, succeeded in the challenging selection processes. He has also been among the 15 young scientists selected to deliver a contributed talk; his was about “the interactions of ionic liquids and biomolecules”, and it was presented in the Biophysics section organized by Prof. Kurt Wüthrich (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2002).  

Dr. Antonio Benedetto received, in 2015, the “EBSA Bursary” by the European Biophysical Societies’ Association (EBSA) to attend the 10th European Biophysics Congress, 18-22 July 2015, Dresden, Germany, in which he presented a contribution on “Computer Simulation and Neutron Scattering Investigations of Phospholipid Bilayers in Water Solutions of Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids”.

4.	He received, in September 2012, the “Borsellino-Menestrina Prize” awarded in 2012 by the Italian Society of Pure and Applied Biophysical (SIBPA) to the best PhD Thesis in the field of Biophysics.

5.	He received, in April 2012, the academic title of Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Medicine, University of Sydney (Sydney, Australia). 

6. He received, in 2011, the “Scientist Award” by the Italian Society of Pure and Applied Biophysical (SIBPA) to attend the 56th Annual Meeting of the (American) Biophysical Society 25-29 February 2012, San Diego, California, USA, in which he presented a contribution on “Protein Dynamics by Neutron Scattering: The Protein Dynamical Transition”.

7.	He won the “Giovanni Semerano Prize” awarded in 2011 by the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) to the best PhD Thesis in the field of Chemical-Physics.

8.  He won the “Young Scientist Travel Award” awarded in 2011 by the International Union of  Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) to attend the 17th International Biophysics Congress 30th October - 3rd November 2011, Beijin, China, in which he did a talk on “Puzzle of Protein Dynamical Transition and Fragile-to-Strong Crossover”.

9.	He won a European Fellowship to attend at the Higher European Research Course for Users of Large Experimental Systems (2011 edition) on Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics, at Joseph Fourier University, Institut Laue-Langevin, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, CNRS, Laboratoire Leon Brillouin and SOLEIL (Grenoble and Paris).

10.	He received the Mention of “Doctor Europaeus” in March 2011 by the Messina University.

11.	In Academic Year (AY) 2010/2011 he has received the "Cultore della Materia” academic title for the Course of Physics at the Bachelor Degree in Biotechnology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Messina.

12.	He won the “Gilberto Bernardini Prize” for “excellence research” awarded in 2008 by the Italian Physics Society (SIF).

13.	He was selected and participated at the "Bologna Experience for Superior Talents" (BEST 2008), organized by the Bologna University with Alto Patronato del Presidente della Repubblica Italiana (under the auspices of the President of the Italian Republic).

14.	He won the “Galluzzi Prize for Physics” (2007 edition) awarded by the University of Roma Tre for his high-level research activity in his MS work.

15.	He won an “Undergraduate Research Fellowship“ (2007) awarded by the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL, Grenoble, France) for developing a part of his MS research work at the ILL.

16.	He won the “Luigi Freddara” Italian National Fellowship (2002-2007) for academic merits. The fellowship has been confirmed for the whole duration of both the Bachelor degree and the Master Degree: he took a total of 53 exams during his academic career, and obtained in 51 exams/53 the full score of 30/30 with 25 cum laude.

Teaching experience 

Dr. A. Benedetto carried out several teaching and support-teaching activities. 

Since 2012, he is doing teaching and support teaching for the courses of Thermodynamics, and Quantum Mechanics at the Bachelor Degree in Physics of the School of Physics, University College Dublin.
He also co-coordinates and teaches (Electromagnetism) in the Summer School Program of the School of Physics, University College Dublin, and teaches in the Nano-Bio M.Sc. of the School (Neutron Scattering).

He delivered half of the lessons of the Course of Physics at the Bachelor Degree in Biotechnology Course at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Messina (in Academic Years (AY) 2007/2008, 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011, 2011/2012). 
He was also tutor of the (i) Physics Course 1A and (ii) Experimental Physics Laboratory Course 1A at the Bachelor Degree in Physics in AY 2009/2010, (iii) Physics Course and (iv) Mathematics Course at the Bachelor Degree in Marine Biology and Ecology in AY 2009/2010.
Education 

Dr. A. Benedetto obtained his High-School Scientific Diploma on 29th August 2002 at the Liceo Scientifico Statale Archimede in Messina, with a final evaluation of 100 cum laude/100. 

He obtained his Degree in Physics on 26th July 2005 defending a thesis titled Synchrotron Light Spectroscopy (supervisor: Prof. Salvatore Magazù) at the Department of Physics of the University of Messina, Italy, with a final evaluation of 110 cum laude /110.

He got his Master Science Degree in Physics on 26th July 2007 presenting a thesis titled Elastic and Quasi-Elastic Incoherent Neutron Scattering: an Integrated Experimental, Theoretical and Simulative Approach on Systems of Biophysical Interest of Increasing Complexity (supervisor: Prof. Salvatore Magazù), at the Department of Physics of the University of Messina, Italy, with a final evaluation of 110 cum laude /110. 
During the two degrees, he did a total of 53 exams (listed at the bottom). He got 30/30 in 51 exams (25 of which cum laude).

He received his Ph.D. in Physics on 21st March 2011 defending a thesis titled Protein Dynamics by Neutron Scattering (supervisor: Prof. Salvatore Magazù) at the Department of Physics of the University of Messina; in the same occasion, he also received the mention of “Doctor Europaeus”.

Research interests and goals

I am a dedicated scientist whose activity has until now been devoted mainly to the application of neutron scattering, computer simulations, and complementary techniques to characterize both structural and, in particular, dynamical properties of systems of biological interest, e.g. proteins, DNA, lipids membranes, and of their hydration solvents with particular attention to pure water, and water solutions of disaccharides and room-temperature ionic liquids. 
The conceptual focus of my scientific interests has been represented by the investigation of hydrogen-bonding networks at the interface between water and organic molecules. I am interested, in particular, in understanding both the structure-dynamics-function relationship and the role of hydrogen bonds in bio-systems, and how they affect their dynamics and self-assembly properties.

            Room temperature ionic liquids and biomolecules are both paradigmatic classes of organic molecules, each consisting of a prodigious number of distinct chemical species, organized into large families of homologous compounds. Their combination is set to open new avenues for discoveries and for applications in biochemistry, biomedicine and pharmacology, food science and nanotechnology.


                   Recently, my colleagues and I briefly review experimental and computational studies of room temperature ionic liquids interacting with important classes of biomolecules, including phospholipids, peptides and proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates.

    He has also been among the 15 young scientists selected to deliver a contributed talk. His talk was about “the interaction of ionic liquids and biomolecules”, and it was presented in the Biophysical section organized by Prof. Kurt Wüthrich, Nobel Laureate in chemistry 2002.

Starting Investigator Research Grant

      Dr. Antonio Benedetto has been awarded the prestigious “Starting Investigator Research Grant (SIRG)” (ed. 2016) by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) on research project titled "Breathing Life into Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids: a Comprehensive Experimental and Computational Study of their Interaction with Biomolecules"

Biography

    I was born in Padua, Italy in August 1984. In 2007 I obtained a Master Science degree in Physics, with a thesis on the dynamics of large organic molecules, ranging from simple polymers to complex biomolecules. The thesis has been awarded two national prizes, i.e. the “Galluzzi Prize for Physics” by the Third University of Rome (“Roma Tre” University), and the “Gilberto Bernardini Prize” by the Italian Physical Society. After the Master, I enrolled in a PhD, fully supported by a national fellowship of the Italian Ministry of University and Research. My research activity during the PhD years has been carried out at the Department of Physics, University of Messina, Italy, and at the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. In 2011 I obtained the PhD certificate, defending a thesis on proteins’ dynamics. Also this thesis has been awarded two national prizes, i.e. the “Giovanni Semerano Prize” by the Italian Chemical Society, and the “Borsellino-Menestrina Prize” by the Italian Biophysical Society. Following a short postdoc in Australia at the Bragg Institute (e.g. the Australian neutron facility) supported by an Australian research grant (of which I was the PI) in September 2012 I joined the School of Physics, University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland as a Research Fellow, supported by a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (MC) of the European Commission. In January 2015, I moved to the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland as a young principal investigator, supported again by a Marie Curie PSI Individual Fellowship. In the meantime, I have also been appointed Visiting Lecturer at the School of Physics, UCD, Dublin, where I am co-ordinating a summer program in Physics. Recently, I have been granted a Starting Investigator Research Grant by the Science Foundation Ireland, so I moved back to UCD School of Physics as a Principal Investigator, where I am setting up my own research group in “Neutron Scattering and Computational Methods for Complex (Bio-) Systems”. I have been also appointed Visiting Research Fellow in PSI.
